7th Advent Blog - REJOICE! God the Son became the Son of God!

"And in the same region there were shepherds out in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night.  And an angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were filled with great fear.  And the angel said to them, 'Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all people.  For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord'" (Luke 2:8-10, ESV).

The angel announced to the shepherds what was already made known to Joseph.  In Matthew 1:21-23 we read:

"'She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.  All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet:  'Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call his name Immanuel' (which means. God with us).

"The announcement of the birth of the Messiah was meant to bring joy to God's people.  It is beyond my comprehension that God the Son was willing to become the Son of God.  And it was done for us.  Imagine, the presence of a holy, righteous God in the presence of sinful people.

The angel announced that His coming would be a source of "great joy." Because of the Incarnation, we can experience the joy that comes from salvation; the joy that characterizes a personal relationship with Christ.

The joy that we experience should overflow into the lives we live for Him.  That joy must characterize each day as we bring glory to God through the way we live our lives.

Paul writes in Philippians 4:4 that we are to "rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice.

"We do have joy because of the coming of the King of kings and the Lord of lords.  Let's live our lives in such a way that others see the joy of the Lord in us.
